Contents of letter from Chairman of Lochmaben Community Council. Also please see attached route proposal. Please can people comment on this suggestion through your local community councils. Both Lochmaben and RFT CC’s fully support this initiative.
I write on behalf of Lochmaben and District Community Council seeking advice regarding the provision of a new cycle/walking route within Dumfries and Galloway. Following the large increase in cycling and walking activity within the Annandale and Eskdale area during the pandemic a new route would be an ideal fit with other local and national initiatives regarding the reduction of obesity, the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle and the benefits of increased tourism to local businesses.
The proposal would help to link up existing national cycle routes 74 and 7 as well as regional cycle route 10. It will take cycling traffic away from the extremely busy A709 which is classified as a Strategic Timber route by Dumfries and Galloway Council. There are additional benefits as the route will also offer walking links connecting various sections of the Annandale Way which in turn meets the Southern Upland Way further north at Beattock and the core path network throughout the region. The outline route has been suggested as following the original railway line which connected Lockerbie with Dumfries and beyond. This would require a reinstatement of an old bridge where it crosses the River Annan at Priestdykes, midway between Lockerbie and Lochmaben. The initial stage would be in the region of 5 miles long but over time will lend itself to being extended in both an easterly direction towards the Borders, or further west beyond Dumfries.
